Alicante

Benijofar

- located close to Rojales, has one of the smallest municipal districts in the region - 4.4 square kilometres. Its Arabic name, yauhar, means the son of a pearl, and refers to either the Arabic name 'Yauhar' or to a topographical feature shaped like a pearl. Its fate has always been linked to the Segura River, which has been the source of both fortune and misfortune - the 1957 floods destroyed the village and killed some of its inhabitants. Today the river is channelled and controlled and constitutes a rich economic source for Benijofar. Farming is Benijofar's main economic activity, especially vegetables and fruits, which are sent each day to markets in towns and villages throughout the province of Alicante.

Cuidad Quesada

Dolores

- When the War of Spanish Succession between the Bourbons and the Austrian Habsburgs divided Spain the Cardinal of Cartagena-Murcia, Luis Antonio de Belluga y Moncada, sided with the Bourbons. After their victory Felipe V granted the cardinal the title of 'Field Marshall' of Valencia. The Cardinal had a grand project to drain the marshy land of the Vega Baja and use it for farming - the rent obtained from this land would then be donated to charitable works. Several villages were founded on this land, Dolores being one of these. Dolores is essentially an agricultural village dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables, especially artichokes, and raising cattle. The largest cattle fair in the province is held on the 1st Sunday of August. The village also manufactures footwear.

Elche

- Elx is located on the Costa Blanca and is surrounded by more than 300,000 palm trees; it is the third most populous city of the Valencian Region. Elx encompasses the entire range of attractions that the province has to offer its visitors: pre-history, history, natural riches, beaches and the influence of its citizens on culture and traditions are all elements that are worthy of note in this modern, thriving and growing city. Gran Alacant

- This part of Spain is renowned for it’s beaches, (Costa Blanca - White Coast) and the nearest, Los Arenales is no exception with its golden sands. The promenade has shops, bars and restaurants, or try Playa Carabassi with it’s sand dunes and shaded pine area with picnic tables. There is a ridge overlooking the beaches which is a very popular site for paragliding. There is a coast road which runs from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola. Guardamar del Segura is a town that through the course of its history has been able to take advantage of the natural adversities that have befallen it. Sited at the mouth of the Segura River, the town has always held a key position as a guardian of the river. The area, known by the Greeks as Alone, was inhabited by the Iberians as witnessed by the discovery of the Dama de Guardamar at the Cabezo Lucero site, and Moorish remains are visible in a Rábita (religious/fortified outpost delimiting the border with the Christians) that can be found in the area of the town's dunes.

La Hoya

- A beautiful rural area of land near to La Marina urbanisation 15 minutes to Alicante airport, and the palmed city of Elche, unspoilt beaches of La Marina 8 minutes.

La Marina

- Located 20 minutes drive south of Alicante Airport. There is a large urbanisation and everything that you could possibly need to make your stay here enjoyable is within reach at a nearby location. The Blue Flag La Marina beach is just down the road with its natural sand dunes and there is always space to spread out on 11 miles of golden sandy beaches. Market day in La Marina is Thursday and there is also a Sunday Market on the dedicated site at the same location on calle Justo Quesada. La Marina urbanisation is situated within the local council area of San Fulgencio.

La Siesta

- Torrevieja is famous in Spain for it's many fiestas and the biggest fiesta being the Habaneras festival in August. For forty years, every August, Torrevieja has held its traditional Competition of Habaneras and Polyphony, which now has an international character, since it is one of the greatest cultural celebrations in Europe. Voices from all over the world come together in Torrevieja, and the Habanera sings its way out of the competition precincts, and becomes the folklore of the locals. For a whole week, Torrevieja sways to the rhythm of the habanera, with its tropical flavour from Cuba. The competition awakes the interest of thousands of people throughout Spain, who experience it each year in Torrevieja.

San Isidro

- This is the newest municipality of the province of Alicante - it gained its independence from Albatera on the 22nd of May 1993. The district is located in a former wetland area known as 'El Saladar', which was drained due to the efforts of Cardinal Belluga's Pious Foundation. In 1939, a law to promote settlements in semi-marshy areas was introduced and a project was set up to establish the village which is now known as San Isidro. The village was created in 1959 on former marshy land - though it has well irrigated land due to its proximity to the Tajo and Segura rivers.

San Miguel de Salinas

- The present-day location of the village dates back to Roman times when it was known as Nisdomia. The village gained its independence from Orihuela in 1836, though originally its municipal district was constituted by just the old centre. This was extended in 1955 to include the area between the Pedrera Reservoir, the Torrevieja Lake and the Águila Crag. The village's main activity is agriculture, especially dry crops, cereals and pulses. Since 1955 the village has farmed 265 hectares of land irrigated by an irrigation canal of Levante, taking advantage of the Tajo-Segura diversion.

Santa Pola

- Salinas, Castle of Santa Pola, Tower of Tamarit, Salt Museum, Island of Tabarca, childrens Pola Park just off the N332. The Roman Porutus Illcitanues is a populous and lively seaside city with almost 15 kilometres of fine sandy beaches. Santa Pola's past has always been intimately linked to the sea, and the sea has determined its economy, culture, gastronomy and the identity of its people. In ancient times it was Elche's port and managed to build up one of the biggest fishing fleets of the entire Mediterranean. The Salinas (salt-flats) are another interesting aspect of Santa Pola. Exploitation of the salt-flats began at the end of the 19th century and they extended over an 880 hectare area that produced 100,000 tons of salt per year.

Torrevieja

- The Moor Tower (Torre del Moro), La Mata Tower (Torre de la Mata), Natural Lake Parks Salinas Casino, Aquopolis Water Park (Finca La Hoye Grande), Carrefour Hypermarket (also in the town of Elche). The entire area around of Torrevieja and Orihuela are famous for their salt production. Huge salt lakes surround the road down from Alicante. The city of Torrevieja which get's its name from an old tower (old=vieja ; tower=torre), was first mentioned around 1800. It became famous in 1802, when it took over the salt administration from Orihuela. Apart of the salt industry, tourism and fishing keep the city alive. The harbour surrounded by many Torrevieja hotels, gives home to 300 fishing ships and over 900 private sport boats. A wonderful view especially when sun sets.
